How to Create Room Data Sheets in Revit

Room data sheets are used to communicate the requirements of the client for a specific type of space to the design teams. They are typically developed during the briefing and architectural programming stages. The information they contain can include general requirements and guidance notes or detailed specifications for fixtures and finishes (F&F) and mechanical and electrical equipment.

The information is typically presented on a single sheet per room, hence the name. However, depending on scope of work it may be distributed over more than one sheet. The sheets are usually provided to contractors with the specifications and drawings.

A variety of software is available to aid in the creation of RDSs. Some are designed to link to Revit models to ensure that the contents of the model and the room data sheet are compatible. This makes the document easier to manage and prevents duplicate entries in both.

Layer is a powerful management tool for the room data. It comes with an easy-to-use interface for capturing data from rooms and can produce multiple sheets for different types of space. It is also able to backfill existing room types in Revit projects and also create custom reports. Layer lets users to specify naming conventions on sheets, and can control properties like scale, browser organisation and naming.

The Layouts panel lets you control the layout of views created on a sheet including margin values as well as the location of the titleblock. The option to block view titles from estimating the size of the sheet’s total view is also possible. This will prevent titles from being overlapping on the sheet. It could also allow for more elevation views to be created on a single sheet.
